The Elements of Interior Design Pt. 2 Blog: Week 2

Elements of Interior Design Pt. 2

The second part of the Elements of Interior Design got into Light, Color, Texture, Pattern.

Natural or man-made lighting is a critical aspect of any space. Without it, other elements would not be able to shine to their full potential. There are 4 main types of lighting: ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting, and mood lighting. When considering lighting is important to address the activities that will be undertaken in this space, both the quantity and quality should be considered.

Color works with the elements of design to create the desired visual effect. Color and its temperature affect the mood of an interior and has psychological impact. We continued talking about color theory and the way that cool and warm colors create an impact on the space. Then we got into more color theory that explained primary, secondary, and complementary colors. After this we discussed the terminology, we can use to describe colors, such as hue, value, tint, shade, and tone. The vocab continued when we started talking about color schemes: monochromatic, analogous, triadic, complimentary or direct complimentary. Color psychology was my favorite part of the lesson because it went into more depth about cool, warm, and neutral colors and then color associations. Hue, value and intensity are also important concepts of color.

Texture is the visual and tactile quality given to a surface by the size, shape, arrangement and proportions of the parts. It describes the roughness, smoothness, matte or glossiness, background, and viewing angle of objects. It can be tactile or visual. Pattern also adds visual interest, and its repetitive decorative element can create depth and enhance the personality.

Sketch Assignment:

Sketching Interiors helped us learn about the importance of a line. Various line weights, line types, line quality are all important and we got to explore this by creating a contour line drawing!
