The Elements of Interior Design Blog: Week 1
BLOG WEEK 1
In class we talked about the Elements of Interior Design. We talked about the importance of a line and how this most basic element is usually the “focal point”, which is one of the most fundamental components of Interior Design because it is the first thing viewers see. We also have a line. There are four main types of lines we see in Interior Design: Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, and Curved. These each characterize a certain tone or feeling set in the space and add a specific aesthetic to an area. In different spaces, different lines work best, whether you want to create a sense of peace, comfort, grandeur, energy, movement or grace. We also talked about the importance of planes, form, space and volume. These elements of design, though they seem straight forward and somewhat basic, are the key features in successful atmospheres.
In the first chapter of Sketching Interiors, it talks about the basic steps to start drawing. Free hand sketching is common for designing and a useful tool for mapping out your ideas. You can draw anything anywhere if you have the materials and the interest! It is all about your perception. You can use sketching paper, regular or colored pencils, an eraser, sharpeners, sharpies, or markers. The book goes on 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 to work on your right and left-side of your brain to change what you want to see into the elements that are actually right in front of you. There are four main skills you can learn to create skilled drawings: 1) perceiving edges (contour drawings), 2) perceiving spaces (negative space drawings), 3) perceiving lights and shadows (values), and 4)percieving spatial relationships and proportions (perspective). These things also translate to digital drawings
This week we did upside down drawings. These really worked out the brain but it was so fun to see the end result! It is funny how we were able to pick out the features and elements such as the points, lines, and planes to create the image instead of drawing it correctly, right side up to draw the image. It was definitely a cool activity!
Great summary of the information this week. I also enjoyed the photos you choose! I agree that the upside drawing exercises were fun and challenging! Great job!
